Abstract

Contrary to our German-speaking neighbor states, the issue of alphabetization of migrants is neither specifically found in the official curriculum for language development of migrants nor in a separate concept. Furthermore, in this area, compared with German as a foreign or second language, only a small amount of teaching materials can be found. In this article, Alexis Feldmeier’s Alpha-Box will be presented and its benefits for adult literacy teaching discussed. The Alpha-Box is characterized by a learner-centered approach and self-regulated learning – both aspects which are central in further language courses as well as for a respectful learning atmosphere for adults. A study comparing traditional alphabetization and alphabetization with the Alpha-Box showed an increased motivation and an enhanced learning success for learners being alphabetized with the Alpha-Box.
