Abstract

An analysis grid for audiovisual science communication in the foreign language classroom

Introducing audiovisual science communication into the foreign language classroom provides engaging materials for both language teaching and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), while preparing students to participate in international scientific discourses through media. At the same time, science communication is not neutral: it is shaped by linguistic and audiovisual choices that can facilitate or hinder understanding and may even contort scientific facts. Interrogating both scientific content and the ways it is communicated, the multilingual rubric presented here supports students in critically analysing and producing videos and films on science in the foreign language classroom.
