Abstract

In this article, the author reflects on the theoretical and practical rationale for maximizing the use of the target language, and for selective and judicious use of the first language, in second and foreign language classrooms. Practical strategies are proposed. Of particular interest are suggestions for talking openly with students about code switching and why and how to code switch effectively so that the first language is a useful support and not a crutch.
