Physical Education (PE) is a subject, which is well suited to support language learning at a lower level. This article shows, how listening and speaking competencies at level A1 can be supported during PE lessons. The learning goals are influenced by the contents of the subject as well as by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The described language exercises are linked to the popular game “Brennball”, also called “Mattenlauf ”. The exercises support competencies in listening and spoken interaction and aim at extending the vocabulary. Learners practice naming positions and activities with a ball, they give their opinion on a game or they practice comprehending instructions. The teaching methods used are language immersion and Total Physical Response (TPR).
