In this article, we focus on the description of the main characteristics of French language teaching in the Italian-speaking region Switzerland. In particular, we look at the presence and the role of Swiss French at various school levels, but especially in the upper middle school sector. The results of a 2016 socio-didactic survey will stimulate reflection and trigger discussion on the importance and relevance of raising learners' awareness on diversity and variability in the French-speaking world and the impact that innovative measures could have on learners' representations and teachers' instructional practices.
