Abstract

A contrastive translation workshop of Catullus' 101, in a second year class of italian "Liceo Linguistico", aims to achieve the following objectives: 1.to facilitate the learning of Italian by non-Italian-speaking students; 2.to reinforce linguistic skills useful for the study of modern languages; 3.to affirm the centrality of the literary text as a favourable terrain for language learning. The repeated and multidirectional switch from the source language (Latin) to the various target languages, as well as strengthening linguistic skills, helps to transform Latin from a marginal and passive element into a central and productive factor for the learning of modern languages. In addition, placing a literary text at the centre helps to reinforce the different levels on which advanced textual skills are based.
