This article reflects on collaboration between researchers and foreign language teachers within design-based research (DBR) projects. While both groups share educational goals, communication and cooperation are often hindered by differing motives and perspectives. Drawing from three DBR projects focused on oracy in English language education, the authors propose heuristics for improving collaboration across different research phases. These include using de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats for initial problem analysis, structured task distribution through vertical and horizontal collaboration in the design and construction process, and applying Rogers’ diffusion of innovation model to support sustainable implementation. The article offers a preliminary procedural design principle to guide future research-practice partnerships.
