In this article I am going to report on an activity that I have put in place during this school year with a group of pupils attending the first year of the Italian secondary school (11/12 years old) where I teach English as a foreign language. In this activity we use “Montessori lap-books” which this group of pupils has made in the frame of a cooperative-learning activity. The “lap-books” are then used in order to support the memorization and the application of some basic English linguistic events. I like this activity because it helps me to make students with different abilities work together. Visible results concern above all transversal skills such as meta-linguistic and language awareness, autonomy and the development of learning strategies such as auto-correction strategies. Our hypothesis is that these transversal skills can support communication in L2.
