Abstract

The present paper intends to be the opening wedge in a new way of teaching grammar to language for specific purposes (LSP) learners, who now represent most of the second-language-learning students in higher education in France. The originality of the approach described here lies in the transposition of the terminology belonging to the learners’ specialized domain (e.g. medicine, chemistry, art, etc.) to grammar, with a view to render the grammatical discourse more accessible. We discuss why, as an English-for-medical-purposes teacher, we opted for this “metaphorising” process, and we show how, by way of concrete examples, we implement it in our LSP classes.
