Zweisprachiger Sachfachunterricht an Mittelschulen – Problemfelder

Abstract

The Mittelschul- und Berufsbildungsamt Zürich piloted a project of ten high schools offering a bilingual matura (German/English) from 2001 to 2006. The project was evaluated in an external scientific study which yielded many positive results. Due to the success of the program the project has been extended for three years to continue until 2009. Naturally, there is room for improvement. In a next step, all parties involved will have to focus on such areas as use of language, materials, cooperation between teachers and didactics of bilingual teaching. The starting point ought to be the didactics of bilingual teaching. Only once it is clear how teaching bilingually is different from teaching in one language, can one decide on the use of language in such programs, on the materials for this kind of teaching and approach the issue of cooperation between teachers at bilingual schools.
