Abstract

There are many open questions due to the introduction of late start primary English (5th grade). The roles of the three languages (French, German, English) but also the links between them must still be defined. The workshop at the 3e Forum des Langues was devoted to dealing with such questions before any curricula and syllabi are designed. Many possibilities were explored: in particular, the possibilities of creating links between German and English on a linguistic, meta-linguistic, intercultural and meta-cognitive level emerged because of the linguistic proximity of the two languages. Beside these possibilities, CLIL was evoked to respond to the fact that the introduction of a third language was time-consuming. Finally, participants thought that it is necessary to modify course books and to introduce modular course books that correspond to these needs of flexibility between the languages.
