Abstract

The article examines the interdisciplinary use of Latin and Spanish sources on the colonisation of the Americas. Working with these texts allows for a nuanced perspective on European colonialism. Texts by Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, and Bartolomé de Las Casas form the basis of the teaching unit. The aim is to critically question historical narratives with regard to their Eurocentric perspective and the dissemination of barbarian stereotypes. Using examples from ancient and modern texts, the historical origins of modern concepts such as "white supremacy" as well as neocolonial and racist discourses are highlighted.
