Abstract

The article looks into factors explaining the recent popularity of tablet computers in German primary and secondary schools. It discusses central questions such as the schools’ infrastructure, the role of the textbook in the tablet setting and the technical added value of tablets versus other digital media. Based on the author’s ongoing research into tablet computers in Bavarian secondary schools, the potential of tablets for the teaching of English as a foreign language is discussed. For further reference, a set of good practice examples and a list of book recommendations is included.
