Abstract

This article discusses the question of how culinary topics can be used in foreign language teaching as a means of conveying cultural aspects from learners’ own cultural backgrounds as well as from the target language culture(s). In order to do so, the author argues that it is first necessary to clarify the cultural understandings on which the teaching and learning objectives are based. This article promotes a careful distinction between intercultural and transcultural approaches and a straying away from methodological nationalism in foreign language teaching.
